Theme Game Day #10 – The Unopened

28 Jan

Almost caught up to the present. A couple weeks back, after the craziness of the holiday season finally wound down, our group took stock of our collections and we realized that we still had a lot of games still in the shrink wrap. Not all of them from Christmas or Hanukkah, either. So we took this opportunity to play a few of those unopened games. The only ground rule was that the game still had to be sealed at that very moment. In the interest of time on game day, it was allowable to now open and punch the games out, and read the rules ahead of time.

Theme Game Day #9 – Location Games

28 Jan

If I was rich, and wasn’t scared of flying, this post would have pictures of each game being played in the location where the game is set. But I’m not rich, and I am terrified of airplanes…so we have a series of games set in far off locations, being played in Dublin, Ohio.

Theme Game #8 – The Apocalypse!

28 Jan

This one’s going to be short for a couple reasons. Mainly because we only played three games before I ultimately decided I just couldn’t bear being around people anymore (I had a screaming headache that day). It’s also going to be short because one game I have almost nothing to say about it, and another I intend to cover in much greater detail when February rolls around (I’ll explain that more in a few days). So let’s get to it!

Theme Game Day #7 – Lena Day!

21 Jan

My game group meets every Monday at the store I work at (have I mentioned it? I have? Too bad. Beyond the Board in Dublin, Ohio. Go there!). It usually starts out at my friend Tim and myself, sometimes Matt. Later Ron shows up, and even later than that is Lena. Others float in and out depending on their schedules.

Theme Game Day #6 – Alan Moon Games

21 Jan

Last time, we did boat games. In the mix of potential games was a little obscure Alan Moon game called “Surf’s Up Dude” which doesn’t have boats…but that’s beside the point. As an excuse to get it played, we decided to make a week all about Alan Moon games.

Theme Game Day #5 – We’re On A Boat!

10 Jan

This week was originally just going to be pirate-themed games since there are more than enough pirate games out there these days. However, as we were sitting around talking things over, a couple of games came up that we decided we really wanted to play. One of those, Vikings, of course didn’t get played. But we did get to the other, as well as a few other boat-themed games on this day.

Theme Game Day #4 – Deckbuilding

3 Jan

Deck Building games have become a favorite genre of mine. Maybe it’s a remnant of my Maagic: The Gathering days. I really enjoy searching for combos. So it made sense that after a week filled with card games, our group decided to delve into a few deck building games. We only got to three different games today, because we had to sit and learn two of them from step 1. Our first game, of course, is a partial departure from the theme.
